Ogden Concert Band

Organized as a community band in the early 1970’s, the Ogden Concert Band is comprised of professional, semi-professional, and serious amateur musicians from the greater Ogden, UT area. Two to three formal concerts are scheduled each year, typically performed at Weber State University in Ogden. In addition, the band plays a summer concert series at the Ogden Amphitheater, as well as concerts at the Hill Air Force Base Museum and the Davis Arts Council’s “Free Sunday Night Concert Series.” The group has also played at special events, including the dedications of Peery’s Egyptian Theater and The George E. Wahlen Veteran’s Home in Ogden, President George H. W. Bush’s 2005 visit to the VFW National Convention in Salt Lake City, the Chai Yi City International Band Festival in Taiwan, and concert tours in Hof, Germany. Special guests who have performed with the group include the Utah Symphony bass trombonist Russell McKinney and Ogden jazz legend Joe McQueen.

In 1993 Dr. Thomas Root became director of the band, and the “Ogden Concert Band” became the group’s official name. That year Ogden’s mayor and city council passed a resolution honoring Dr. Root and members of the band for their individual commitment and combined achievements representing Ogden City. In 2015, Dr. Shannon Roberts, Director of Bands at Weber State University, became the band’s director following Dr. Root’s retirement.

Ogden Concert Band performances include a broad range of selections from a variety of musical styles and periods, giving audience members opportunities for enjoyable, diverse and educational musical experiences.  We also are  developing a community outreach program to educate, enlighten and encourage  prospective audiences as well as other local musical organizations, particularly those with participating young musicians.

For this Sunday Night Concert we are privileged to have as our guest conductor, Rodney Wayman, Director of Bands at Syracuse High School. Mr. Wayman holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Utah State University and has taught at elementary, middle, junior and high schools including Viewmont and Roy High Schools. He has also been the conductor of the Davis, Tooele and Weber School District honor bands for high school and junior high. He is involved with the All-State Band committee, Davis Youth Symphony, Utah Music Educators Association and the National Association for Music Education. He has adjudicated in Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Colorado and continues to be in demand as an adjudicator.   As a performer, Mr. Wayman has played with the Salt Lake Symphonic Winds as well as varied musicals and other performing organizations.  He is the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement award from Viewmont High and the KSL Teacher Feature award.
