Dr. Thomas Root, Director
The Ogden Concert Band is in it’s 15th year of providing concerts in a variety of venues. Each year the band performs at least 2 formal indoor concerts and at other events in Ogden and surrounding communities. Band members include teachers, university graduates, students and others from the community from a variety of backgrounds. Dr. Thomas Root, a professor in the Performing Arts Department and head of the band program at Weber State University serves as director along with Dr. Darrell Lund as associate director.
The Ogden Concert Band was created in 1993 by executive order of the mayor of Ogden City to provide appropriate musical entertainment of the highest quality for the community. A vital element of the mission of the Ogden Concert Band is to provide performance opportunities and means of recognition for the many fine musicians in the Ogden area. The Band has performed at the Utah Arts Festival, the National Motor Coach Association event, the national VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) convention and for the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Ogden in 2002. They also played a joint concert with the United States Army Singing Sergeants from Washington D.C. in the Egyptian Theatre. Additionally, they have been guests on two occasions at the Hof, Germany Festival in Hof, Germany and were sponsored by the Taiwanese government to play at their festival in Taiwan.
The band’s repertoire includes traditional band concert music such as Copland, Gould, Bernstein, Webber, Williams and Holst, plus Sousa marches, patriotic songs, show tunes and movie theme scores.
