Standards & Substandards is the easygoing quartet made up of Caryn Crowley (vocals/diva), Tim Herzog (bass), Adam Johnston (piano), and Ian Marshall (drums). With roots in jazz traditions and branches reaching out to everything else, we expand the American songbook to include not only “standards” but also our jazz interpretations of contemporary and classic songs from The Beatles to Beyonce. We’ll just as happily perform an upbeat vocal arrangement from the Gershwin brothers as a bluesy torch song from Nina Simone; and we’ll gleefully blur traditions of funk, pop, rock, and blues as the spirit moves us. Basically, we just like playing music as we reimagine it, celebrated with charismatic and powerful vocals backed by playful instrumentalists.
