The music performed by the Offbeats features authentic American tunes from the late 1910s through the 1930s. Ragtime was still around, but a new genre was emerging, yet to be named “jazz.” This rough-and-tumble music utilized a tuba (for marching in a New Orleans Street band) and virtuoso solo instrumentalists like Louis Armstrong. Eventually, what we now call “Traditional Jazz” evolved into the smooth, big-band music we associate with the 1940s. The music we perform was created during the short time between Scott Joplin and Glenn Miller. In our show, you’ll enjoy family-friendly 3-minute tunes (which would fit on one side of a record). Bandleader Lawrence arranges our music from original scores and recordings that still exist from this period.
About The Offbeats:
The Offbeats Traditional Jazz Band is the venture of husband-and-wife team Lawrence and Jane Price. During the pandemic of 2020, while stuck at home, they hatched a plan to help preserve the uniquely American music that emerged during the early 20th century. They roped six other local instrumentalists and a vocalist into the project and began rehearsing in the Spring of 2021. Band personnel includes two retired US military service members, several public-school educators, and an environmental scientist (who performs on a 1926 banjo).
