Wasatch Alphorns is a collective of alphorn players in the state of Utah who are promoting the art and music of the Swiss alphorn.
A native instrument of Switzerland, the alphorn is a conically-bored wooden instrument, roughly twelve feet long, with a wooden cup-shaped mouthpiece. The alphorn has no keys, finger holes or valves, and therefore, when blown correctly, produces beautiful expressive notes of a pure natural harmonic series. Originally carved from solid softwood and used by mountain herdsmen for signaling, communication and herd management, alphorns are primarily now used as musical instruments.
Organized as a non-profit corporation in August 2022, Wasatch Alphorns brings the love of the alphorn — with its interesting history, unique voice and varying styles of musical expression — to schools, community bands and symphonies, senior centers and community festivals on a regular basis.
